Then I realized the obvious. FCA was not the most popular club at Spencer's high school. All the local churches did not have an annual Mormon Bashing on the sermon schedule. His friends probably didn't get together every morning to have a prayer circle around the flag pole. A quarter of all his local TV channels were not Praise & Worship. Not to mention he probably didn't't see WOW Worship infomercials on late at night. In short, Spencer didn't grow up in the Bible Belt.
So, for all you other deprived souls out there, I give to you "Awesome God"...
*On an interesting sidenote, contrary to popular belief, the entire lyrics of the song aren't just "Our God is an awesome God/He reigns from Heaven above/With wisdom power and love/Our God is an awesome God." For whatever reason, many churches sing only the chorus lines. You can find the song in its entirety here.

Well I know the song. My mom [yes, mormon] blasts it in her car on a daily basis.
It's funny, I think of you as growing up in UT, but I guess you were still pretty young when you moved.
Yup, I know the song well. In HS, I loved the WoW worship albums. I wasn't LDS yet, but I still like some of the music. Nate can't handle it though.
wow.. apparently i miss out a lot growing up in Washington.. I had never heard of any of those things!
Not sure how I know it as well as I do, since I mostly grew up in Utah too. Maybe carrying over from my younger years there in KC? We didn't move away until I was 9, so possibly.
Hi Whintey! It's Rikki Scott from Enid. Do you remember me? ANyhow saw your blog through Cody's and took a peek. You have a darling family. What cute kids!!
I sure know the song and all the fun of living in the Bible Belt. FCA, Prayer Circles, Save the Mormons! I love it!
Yessss! And how your friends have to remind you on at least a weekly basis that you're wrong and you are going to Hell.
Such character building experiences. :)
Yeah, I know that song!
You are so funny and your blog is so entertaining to read! Where'd you find the layout? It's adorable! I love and miss your family and wish I could've gotten to know you guys better! (I wish I could've babysat for you guys, but my sisters get the honor!)

Now this song is going to be in my head all. day. long.
And I know what you mean about having a hubby who doesn't understand the bible belt lifestyle. ;) I was 1 of a very few members in my high school. That's pretty unheard of from him!Brings back memories..... Ha thanks for this!
too funny !!!
oooh oh I've heard it in Washington state. Lot's of Born-agains at my school.
Nice post Whit. I think it is a fine song, with a catchy chorus. But it is so limited in scope, depth and breadth. Compare it with one of your favorites, “If you could Hie to Kolob” with its limitless depth and scope. To me it speaks to the narrowing and limiting of God by modern Christianity. They have forsaken original and early Christian teachings of deification, organizational creation, an open canon, continuous revelation and authoritative priesthood keys. Instead they restrict themselves to a closed canon, no line of priesthood authority, but priestcraft, no current revelation, but they do have an “Awesome” God yet He is an essence, without a body, shrouded in mysticisms of the Nicean Creed and ex nihilo creation. Sad.
So happy to hear from you. It's fun to keep tabs on people you haven't seen forever. Kristyn is actually a second cousin of mine so that's how we connect. It is definately a small world huh?
