lesson learned

So, the other day I was at a Young Womens activity (I'm the YW Secretary). We had a cute little old missionary couple teaching the girls about scholarships for college (they serve at the LDS Employment Resource Center up in Independence, MO). Well, bless their hearts, they thought I was just one of the girls! I used to have that happen to me all the time when I was a Laurels adviser at the ripe ol' age of 19 (could ya blame them, really?), but I thought that with three kids and a few more years under my belt that we would be beyond that. Not so much, apparently. Oh well, as a youth's parent pointed out to me, there will come a time when NO ONE will ever mistake me as a YW again (throw in a few gray hairs and trade in those skinny jeans for some mom jeans (heaven help me) and it's a done deal). In the meantime, I'll take it as a compliment and consider it the Mormon Mommy version of being carded at a bar...and just enjoy it!

Lesson learned: avoid wearing pigtail buns to youth activities at all costs...especially when there are flip flops involved.

ps~I'm a big meany and y'all are not getting any bad haircut/slightly mullet-ish/Joan Jett hair pictures. Sorry folks, but if *you* got a horrid cut would you want it immortalized in the black hole that is the world wide web? me. thinks. not.

pps~I made the girls' pillowcase dresses using this tutorial. I liked the vintagey feel of the style, although they are a bit wide on my girls' wispy bodies (since they don't adjust the width for the age/size of the girl).

Um. Yes. I would post pictures of a horrific haircut. But I have no shame, so no surprise there. :)

Sadly I have always been mistaken as older, which these days usually has people asking me where my other kids are...

Hahaha how awesome!! Getting mistaken as a YW! :o) Someone thought I was 11 when we were on our honeymoon! It was sad!! (we were at a Disney waterpark at the time and in swimsuits and all wet, so I guess that made me look younger? I do have the body of a ten year-old, so 11 was a compliment!) Anyway, sorry about the haircut! I can't wait to check out the tutorial: I just got a sewing machine so now i'm all interested in sewing stuff again--even if it's an idea i'll have to save for awhile! :o)

I think there is more to this story of a Lesson Learned.

Hee, hee--you are too funny. I think it's hilarious that you're taking these lessons to heart. Did it ever occur to you that maybe they were blindish?? There were old, after all. ;)
Awwww *foot stomp*! But I wanna see your hair!! Me thinks I DO!! ;)

That happened to me, being mistaken as a YW. I was 2nd counselor and am only about 5'1" tall making nearly every girl as tall or taller than me. Yup, it was a common occurrence. I was also barely 21, and I have *never* looked my age. I came to a similar conclusion, no braided pigtails to activities outside the building. HA!

You have a good 15 more years to be mistaken and ENJOY! When I show up, I could be mistaken for the MOTHER of any of those girls--oh yeah--do the MATH--I could be!!!!

Funny post!

Ah - I want to be mistaken for a Laurel. It would make me feel so young and fresh. And really, we aren't THAT old yet! We've got to remind ourselves we are in our twenties - we deserve to act and feel like it every now and then.

On the other hand! I enjoyed, as a white templed senior veterinary student, being asked by clients in the hospital if I agreed with what the Resident had just told them about their horse/cow/dog/etc. I would say something to the effect I thought they summed things up well" and the client would then believe them. It irritated some of the Residents, but I thought it was funny. I was just wiser looking! Then on the other, other hand I was shocked by being asked at the wise old age of 32, with a very young Jesse in my arms, "wasn't it fun to take the grand kids to the store?" I hope there was a little blindness mixed into that situation (as Steph suggested above)...

I have to admit I've been party to the confusion of leader for a laurel comment. Except I was the one sticking my foot in my mouth. :) Hey, it was my first Sunday! And luckily everyone chimed in with what a compliment that was - so I'm passing that on to you as well...that is the best compliment!! :)

Oh I remember when I used to be confused for a youth. Not any more...at least my girls still think I am young and cool enough!

Thanks for stopping by the giveaway today. Good Luck!

lol! I'd just take it as a compliment. It's better to look younger than older these days. ;) A few months ago I had a salesman come to my door and when I answered he asked if he could speak to my mom or dad!

I don't think it would happen to me anymore, but I too was mistaken for a YW about five years ago. It just made me mad.
